Troubleshooting Lenovo USB Problems
The first step to fixing your Lenovo USB problem is to check that the latest BIOS and embedded controller is installed on your machine.
You can check if your BIOS needs updating on the
Lenovo BIOS page.
Next check that the USB is enabled in your BIOS.
For A, G, R, T, X and Z series ThinkPads - a) Boot up the machine and while the "Press F1 for BIOS Setup Utility" or "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is being displayed in the bottom left corner ofthe screen, press either the blue Access IBM, ThinkVantage or the F1 key. b) Choose Config and then click USB. The BIOS should list USB Support as [Enabled], if it doesn't then change it. c) Exit the BIOS, saving your settings if prompted.
For 600, 600E, 770, 770E/ED, 770X, and 770Z ThinkPads - a) While holding down the F1 key, turn on the computer. Continue to hold it down until you see the Easy-Setup menu. Type in the correct password if prompted. b) Select Config, then Initialise and then click OK. c) Select Exit, then Restart and then OK to restart the machine.
Check that the USB device is functioning correctly and the drivers are installed correctly. To do this right click your My Computer icon and select Properties, then the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button.
There should be a branch in the device tree labelled Universal Serial Bus Controllers, make sure there isn't a yellow exclamation mark on the branch. Expand the branch, once you do this then you can right click on any of the sub branches and choose Properties. The dialog box that appears will tell you if the device is functioning correctly and also by selecting the Drivers tab you have the option of rolling back to the last known good Lenovo USB driver for the device.
Alternatively, you can uninstall and then re-install the device drivers manually.
Check that the USB device works on another machine and try a different USB device in the same port of your machine to ascertain whether it's the device itself or the machine that'scausing the problem.
Check whether your device is USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 compliant. A USB 1.1 compliant device will usually work fine in a 2.0 port but you will get an error dialog box stating that there has been a non high speed device attached to a high speed port. A USB 2.0 compliant device will also work in a 1.0 (or 1.1) port but at a reduced speed.
Check your USB port in Device Manager, if the sub branch says enhanced in the branch description it will be USB 2.0.
Check that the device doesn't need external power, some devices need an external power source or need a second plug to be plugged into another USB prt. This is especially true of 2.0 devices running in 1.0 ports.
Check that your version of Windows has the latest Service Packs installed, the Service Packs include fixes and updates for USB problems.
Test the USB port for errors using the PC Doctor diagnostics, this is available on most current ThinkPad systems by the F11 key or blue Access IBM button during start up to get into the pre-desktop area. If your system doesn't have this then you can
download PC Doctor
and install it onto your machine.
Working through the above steps should help you diagnose and fix your Lenovo USB problem.
