IBM Lenovo Audio Troubleshooting

Some of the following steps to fault find your IBM Lenovo audio issues may not apply to all models, however they can be used as a general guide.

1. Finding the physical volume controls.
  • ThinkPad A, G, R, T, X, and Z series systems have volume up, down and mute keys which are found at the top of the keyboard. They'll be either round or rectangular shaped.
  • For earlier model ThinkPads there will usually be a volume wheel on the side of the machine or using a key combination of Fn and PgUp or PgDn will either increase or decrease the volume.
2. If you're using Windows as your operating system, check that the volume control is set properly and isn't muted. Also, once you're in the Volume Control, check that the Wave control is set correctly and isn't muted.

To access the Volume Control click the speaker control icon (it will be a small image of a speaker) in the system tray to open the Master Volume control window (see below).

If you can't see the speaker icon in the system tray then use Windows Help (press F1 to open the Help window) and search for Volume Control. Follow the instructions to add the icon to the system tray.

Lenovo Audio Connectors 3. Using the audio connectors on the side of your Lenovo, connect some headphones or speakers to verify that your audio is working.

There will be a jack for connecting headphones, one for plugging in a microphone and on some models, a jack used to connect the line in from an external device such as a stereo or musical instrument.

4. Check that your Lenovo ThinkPad has the latest BIOS installed.

5. Load the default BIOS configuration.

For ThinkPad systems A, R, T, X and Z series.
  • Turn on the ThinkPad.
  • While the "Press F1 for BIOS Setup Utility" or "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is being displayed at the lower left area of the screen during start up, press the blue Access IBM, F1 key or ThinkVantage button.
  • The BIOS Setup Utility will now be displayed. If prompted, type in the correct password.
  • Press the F9 key and then select Yes to load the default configuration.
  • Press the F10 key and then select Yes to save the configuration changes and exit the utility.
For ThinkPad systems 600,600E, 770, 770E/ED, 770X, and 770Z.
  • While holding the F1 key, turn on the machine and keep holding down the key until the Easy-Setup menu appears. Type in the correct password if prompted to do so.
  • Select Config
  • Select Initialise and click OK
  • Click Exit, click Restart, and then click OK to restart your system
6. Check that you have the latest Lenovo audio drivers and that they have been installed properly. Check the version number using the install instructions and the readme file with the drivers, you can download the latest drivers on the ThinkPad driver page. You can also try uninstalling then reinstalling the drivers.

7. Run diagnostic checks on the audio.

For ThinkPad systems A, R, T, and X series, run the PC Doctor or diagnostics. To start PC Doctor for Dos press the F11 key or Access IBM button during startup to enter the predesktop menu. If it's not available in the menu you can download it on the IBM site here.

For ThinkPad systems 600, 600E, 770, 770E/ED, 770X, and 770Z, turn the computer on while holding down the F1 key. Keep holding it down until you see the Easy-Setup menu. If prompted type in your password. Select Test and then click Audio and DSPto run the audio test.

8. Check that you have the latest version of Direct X installed.
  • Click Start then Run
  • Type DXDIAG.EXE in the Open field
  • Check the Direct X version under the System Information tab
